Designing Spaces: The Entryway
“We often neglect it, we store our shoes there, leave our wet umbrella, toss our keys and hang up our coat.”
And yet, it is the first room of your home. You pass through it every day, sometimes several times, and it is the first impression, the first image your guests have of you when they enter your house. We often underestimate the importance of taking care of our entryway.
Here are 2–3 quick tips to elevate your entryway!
-Rule number 1: Storage! A cluttered space is a space where energy stagnates and weakens. So buy a small shelf or a shoe cabinet, hang a few nice hooks for your coats (without overcrowding the wall if possible), and your bags. Get a small basket to hide clutter if it’s really chaotic and there are too many things to conceal (umbrella, bag covers, slippers, etc.). And most importantly, add a small tray or bowl for your keys and loose change!
-Rule number 2: Dress it up and brighten it. Avoid placing a mirror directly opposite the door—a basic rule to prevent incoming energy from being reflected straight back outside. Since your entryway is the first image of you in your home, place one or several objects there that reflect who you are and that you enjoy seeing when you walk in. A beautiful frame if you face a wall upon entering, a shelf or small side table with a travel souvenir, a small light, a bouquet of flowers (not dried—bring life into the space!). In short, have fun with it. You can also add a small rug on the floor to warm up the overall look.
-Rule number 3: Color, again and always. Once again, choose a color that reflects you, one you won’t grow tired of—preferably a bright one, especially if your space is small.
You can also paint half the wall—color on the lower half and white on the upper half—to add a vibrant touch without taking too many risks.
