Designing Spaces: The Bathroom
Bathrooms are unique spaces within a home.
Blending functionality and well-being, everything depends on the time of day.
In the morning, we need to wake up—we want energizing vibes—while in the evening, we seek calm.
During the day, we sometimes go there to unwind or after exercise, enjoying a good hot shower. It’s a space that hosts many moments of our day and, at the same time, says a lot about us.
Observe your bathroom—or a friend’s: is it tidy? Are products scattered along the sink or neatly stored away? Is it minimalist or abundant? This space is quite intimate and reveals certain aspects of who we are.
It is especially important to ventilate this space properly to prevent humidity from settling in and causing damage. If you do not have a window, you must have an air extraction system and leave the door slightly open during the day.
When it comes to lighting, I always recommend being able to manage at least two atmospheres in your bathroom. A strong overall light to see clearly and energize yourself in the morning—for getting ready or applying makeup. And a softer, more subdued light in the evening to relax and unwind. Don’t forget direct lighting above the mirror: it can either enhance visibility alongside the main ceiling light or create a gentle glow when it’s time to relax.
When it comes to décor, anything goes!
This is a space where you can truly have fun. You pass through it several times a day, but rarely stay more than an hour. So you can afford to be bold—mix materials, colors (wallpaper, tiles, paint, colored lighting…), and think of this room as an experience you give yourself several times a day—one that evolves.
Mix materials, colors, unique objects, playful bath towels—you can regularly change the atmosphere thanks to the different elements that make up your bathroom: bath products, linens, mirrors…
Just look at certain hotels today, which beautifully blend styles and colors to offer you an unforgettable experience.
So allow yourself a little fun in this space and give in to your most eccentric desires!
