A Warm Interior for Winter
We all have a little corner in our home where we love to retreat. A space just for ourselves, where we feel good and enjoy disconnecting.
Sometimes, due to lack of space, it’s a corner that is part of our bedroom or living room; for others, it’s a separate, dedicated space, often tucked away and quiet. And for the lucky few, it’s their entire home!
This “cocoon corner,” “little temple,” or “reading/zen nook”—call it whatever you like—may be the top floor of your house, a corner of your living room, or part of your bookshelf area. You place personal objects there, you reflect, you reconnect. Sometimes it’s just a small dedicated spot, a frame with a candle—no need to dedicate an entire room!
With the arrival of winter, we generally look to make our interiors warmer and cozier, extending that cocoon feeling throughout the house.
Paying attention to your interior during this season has a strong impact on your well-being. Daylight fades quickly, and it’s important to feel good at home to avoid giving in to the gloom of colder days.
Here are a few tips to make your interior—or a specific corner—perfectly cozy:
When it comes to colors, there are two schools of thought: light tones or deeper shades such as English green or teal. It all depends on the atmosphere you want to create. Both work—it’s a matter of personality.
For lighting, choose several indirect light sources rather than a single overhead light.
Even when it’s cold, air out your home daily to renew the air and remove humidity.
In terms of décor, whether you opted for lighter or darker walls, add a few brighter accents (cushions, tableware, vases, frames, rugs, candles…) to avoid a dull, overly monochromatic interior that can become boring—especially as natural light decreases. The key word: contrast!
Invest in soft, cozy cushions and blankets, which you can store in large wicker baskets or a wooden chest.
Don’t hesitate to surround yourself with potted plants or fresh flowers.
String lights are more than welcome for a cozier evening atmosphere—especially in this season. Whether it’s Christmas or not, warm lighting is always welcome in a home.
Let’s not forget candles—any heat source that mimics fire. Yes, go ahead and put on fireplace screensavers or artificial crackling flames. Real or not, they affect your subconscious and bring a sense of well-being.
Incorporate elements that reconnect you to nature and that obvious sense of fullness: stone, wood, fire, water, greenery.
May your winter be soft and luminous.
