Designing Spaces: The Kitchen

Whether you enjoy cooking or not, the kitchen is synonymous with conviviality, sharing, and joy.

“Let food be thy medicine,” said Hippocrates. It is a room connected to our health—in short, connected to life itself.

Closed, open, or semi-open, the kitchen has evolved over time to blend completely with our living space. It has become multifunctional: beyond preparing meals, we can eat there, work there, entertain guests…

In terms of layout, it is important to keep your worktop clear. Visually, practically, and energetically, this is a space that should be kept tidy: avoid overcrowding it with visible appliances—keep only what you use daily.

For storage, keep food and other light-sensitive items in closed cabinets, as well as tableware you rarely use.

Instead, display on open shelves the objects you love, that you enjoy seeing and/or use frequently.

Lighting is also important. A general light source combined with direct lighting over the worktop allows you to see clearly while cooking—or in the evening, create a softer atmosphere by turning on only the task lighting.

Ventilation and air circulation are essential. In addition to containing a water source, kitchen vapors and odors can be harmful to your space if not properly ventilated. Today, there are many solutions available at all price points depending on your needs—but beyond using a range hood, open your windows as much as possible.

When it comes to décor, we often hesitate to be bold with kitchen furniture. Since these elements usually remain in place for many years, I recommend choosing timeless cabinetry, and expressing your creativity instead through the backsplash, wall colors, seating, or lighting fixtures.

On your shelves, display objects you love and that reflect who you are.

Once again, this is a room that breathes life and joy—and above all, it is meant to last. Therefore, choose durable and resistant materials.
